Brake pads, also known as brake shoes, are attributed to consumables that will gradually wear out during use. When the wear reaches the limit, it must be replaced, otherwise the braking effect will be reduced, and even a safety incident will occur. Brake shoes are related to life safety and must be treated with caution.
1. Under normal traveling conditions, check the brake shoe once every 5000 kilometers traveled. Not only check the remaining thickness, but also check the wear condition of the shoe, whether the degree of wear on the two ends is the same, and whether the return is comfortable, etc. It is necessary to deal with the abnormal situation immediately.
2. The brake shoe is usually composed of iron lining and conflicting materials. Do not wait for the conflicting materials to wear out before replacing the shoe. For example, for the front brake shoe of a Jetta, the thickness of the new piece is 14 mm, while the limit thickness of the replacement is 7 mm, which includes the thickness of the iron liner of more than 3 mm and the thickness of the conflicting material of nearly 4 mm. Some vehicles have a brake shoe alarm function. Once the wear limit is reached, the exterior will give an alarm to remind you to replace the shoe. It is necessary to replace the shoe that has reached the limit of use. Even if it can be used for a period of time, it will reduce the effect of braking and affect the safety of driving.
3. When replacing, replace the brake pads supplied by the original spare parts. As long as this is done, the braking effect between the brake pads and the brake disc is the best and the wear is minimized.
4. When replacing the shoe, it is necessary to use special tools to push back the brake cylinder. Do not use other crowbars to press it back hard, as this will easily cause the brake caliper guide screw to bend and cause the brake pad to jam.
5. After the replacement, you must step on the brakes a few times to eliminate the gap between the shoe and the brake disc, forming the top foot without braking, which is easy to cause trouble.
6. After the brake shoe is replaced, it needs to run in for 200 kilometers to achieve the best braking effect, and the newly replaced shoe must be moved carefully.
Brake shoe wear-the best time to replace the brake pads
Due to the difference between the driver’s driving habits and driving environment, it is recommended to check the brake pads every 10,000 kilometers or 6 months. Under normal circumstances, it is recommended that the front brake pads be replaced when the vehicle has a mileage of about 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers; the rear brake pads should be replaced when the vehicle has a mileage of about 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers. However, different vehicle conditions, road conditions and the quality of the brake pads themselves will have an impact on its service life. For example, a vehicle traveling on a mountain road for a long time must change the brake pads more frequently than a vehicle traveling on a flat road for a long time. Therefore, there is no exact standard for the time to replace the brake pads, it is just a relative comparison.
The wear limit of the original brake pads of the car is 2mm.
